Houston has a rich and vibrant history of queer theater, from the early 1980s to 2016. In 1992, The Alley Theatre premiered the acclaimed play about AIDS, The Baltimore Waltz, by out lesbian playwright Paula Vogel, winner of The Pulitzer Prize for drama. In 1995, Houston Grand Opera presented the world premiere of the groundbreaking opera Harvey Milk, which went on to be performed in San Francisco, New York and Europe. In 2002, Stages Repertory Theatre presented a riveting production of The Laramie Project, exploring the events surrounding the brutal hate crime murder of gay student Mathew Shepherd. From pioneers of gay theater in the 1980s like director Joe Watts to enterprising theaters like Theater LaB Houston in the 2000s, we will introduce you to the plays and players who have made Houston’s GLBT theater scene so stellar. A veteran arts marketer, Andrew Edmonson has written about the Houston arts scene for Out Smart, The Houston Voice, and The Houston Chronicle. He is the recipient of the Award of Special Merit from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association -- Texas Chapter.
